We design UTOPIAS OF CHANGE for the 21st century to save our earth. Das Verleugnen der Explosion der Ungleichheiten und der Klimasituation sind ein und dasselbe Phänomen.¹ Seit 2020 ist die NEUE GEO-SOZIALE FRAGE im 21. Jahrhundert unser Themenschwerpunkt.

ARCHITEKTUR UND KUNST – ARCHITEKTUR ALS KUNST ARCHITEKTUR ist zusammen mit der MALEREI und der PLASTIK seit jeher nicht wegzudenkender Bestandteil der bildenden Künste. Die drei Künste zusammen bilden einen Verbund. Hinzu kommt die GRAFIK, das DESIGN und die NEUEN MEDIEN. Ihr gemeinsamer Kern erlaubt es den Künsten miteinander zu wirken. Architektur spielt dabei eine verbindende und damit zentrale Rolle. Ganz in diesem Sinne steht die Stärkung von AUTOR:INNENSCHAFT und die Entwicklung eigenständiger Architekt:innenpersönlichkeiten im Zentrum unserer Architekturlehre.

SEID UNDISZIPLINIERT Mit der fortschreitenden Überwindung der Disziplingrenzen innerhalb der bildenden Künste, und darüber hinaus, erlangen wir eine neue Freiheit interdisziplinär, transdisziplinär und bestenfalls nichtdisziplinär, demnach „undiszipliniert“ zu experimentieren und zu produzieren. Wir überwinden gemeinsam die mit der Aufklärung entstandene Trennung zwischen den Künsten und den Wissenschaften und verstehen Architektur als integrative Disziplin, als eine Einheit künstlerischer, wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Aspekte. Leonardo finden wir im technischen und im kunsthistorischen Museum.

ENTWERFEN IST ERFINDEN Entwerfen ist erfinden von VISIONEN. Visionen zu haben bedeutet, sich vorstellen zu können, was man eigentlich haben will und sehen möchte; nicht das, was uns herkömmlich als begehrenswert gelehrt worden ist, behaupten Donella H. und Dennis L. Meadows. Der architektonische Entwurf entsteht aus dem Erkennen, Definieren, Reflektieren und Kommunizieren von komplexen Herausforderungen im Zusammenhang mit unserem Lebensraum und bezieht sich auf die zeitgemäße Gestaltung, Veränderung und Erhaltung einer terrestrischen, lebenswerten, gerechten und ästhetisch ansprechenden Mitwelt. Wir verstehen ENTWERFEN ALS ZENTRALES KÜNSTLERISCHES FACH.

UTOPIEN DER VERÄNDERUNG CHANGE! Mit diesem Appell baut Graeme Maxton eine Brücke in die nahe Zukunft und erklärt in erschreckend eindringlichen Worten WARUM WIR JETZT EINE RADIKALE WENDE BRAUCHEN. Der ehemalige Generalsekretär des Club of Rome² stellt die Frage, was wir jetzt tun müssen, damit unsere Kinder und Enkelkinder und wir selbst weiterhin noch gut auf dieser Erde leben können. Was kann jede:r Einzelne von uns beitragen, um eine Wende zu ermöglichen und für eine nachhaltige Welt zu sorgen? Leider, nicht viel. Vegan zu leben, Flaschen und Plastik zum Recycling zu bringen, kein eigenes Auto mehr zu haben, den Zug zu nehmen statt des Flugzeugs und Energie zu sparen, wann und wo immer das möglich ist – all das ist natürlich hilfreich. Aber am aktuellen Schicksal der Menschheit wird sich nichts ändern, sofern nicht radikale Umstellungen in einem viel Größerem Ausmaß erfolgen.³

DIE PARTY IST VORBEI Wir stehen am Wendepunkt des 21. Jahrhunderts. Hier entscheidet sich unsere Zukunft. Kein Hollywood Held wird uns retten. WIR müssen handeln. JETZT!⁴ Was können wir als Architektinnen und Architekten zu dieser Wende beitragen? Re- und Upcycling, Passivhausstandard, Solarthermie, Windenergie, Biofotosynthese, begrünte Dächer und Fassaden, die Verwendung von natürlichen, erneuerbaren und regionalen Ressourcen und Materialien wie Holz und Lehm u.dgl., auch in Verbindung mit computergestützten Fertigungsmethoden, Organisationsformen wie Mitbestimmung, Baugruppen, Bau-Syndikate oder Baugenossenschaften sind erste Schritte, aber leider zu wenig, um das Leben auf der Erde zu retten.

RADIKAL UMDENKEN Die gegenwärtig meist marktwirtschaftlich besetzte Entwicklungshilfe u. a. mit Infrastruktur-und Siedlungsprogrammen im „Armen Globalen Süden“ ist dabei ähnlich umwelt-zerstörerisch, wie beinahe alle aktuellen Raumplanungs-, Stadterweiterungs- und Bauprojekte des „Reichen Globalen Nordens“. Nicht nur die Volkswirtschaftslehre gehört grundlegend reformiert, sondern auch unsere Disziplin, die Architektur. Wir müssen radikal umdenken und wir müssen dringend handeln.

UTOPIE, VISION UND PROJEKTION IN DER ARCHITEKTUR In den Lehrveranstaltungen schauen wir jeweils auf unterschiedliche Aspekte der Utopien der Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts, auf die Sozialutopisten Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts und noch viel weiter zurück, bis in die griechische Antike zu Homer und seinen Mythos über Daidalos und Ikaros. Nicht der Erfinder Daidalos, sondern der trotz Warnungen und aufgrund von maßloser Selbstüberschätzung an seinem Übermut verstorbene Ikaros wurde zum Helden hochstilisiert. Wohl eine der großen folgenschweren Umdeutungen der Moderne, dessen negative Auswirkungen allesamt auf eine fehlende Achtsamkeit zurückzuführen und am gegenwärtigen Zustand des Habitats Erde abzulesen sind.

DIGITAL LOUNGES Schneller, höher, stärker – die überkommenen Tugenden der modernen Leistungsgesellschaft werden bei uns außer Kraft gesetzt. Wir werden in unserem Studio dem freien Forschen und Experimentieren möglichst unbegrenzten Raum geben. Kommunikation, Interaktion, Kooperation, Kollaboration und Kohabitation bestimmen unsere Arbeit. Wir beschäftigen uns intensiv mit zeitgemäßen philosophischen Werken und mit dem Stand der Forschung in den Geistes-, Natur-, Technologie-, Sozial-, Rechts-, Wirtschafts- und Kulturwissenschaften. Wir lesen, schreiben und diskutieren, untereinander und mit interessanten Gästen aus dem In-und Ausland via Online-Konferenzen und in den Ateliers, wir dokumentieren und kommunizieren all das mit alten und mit neuen Medien UND WIR ENTWERFEN.

FILME BAUEN Wir arbeiten in und mit VIRTUELLEN, PHYSISCHEN und HYBRIDEN REALITÄTEN. Eine wichtige Rolle spielen MULTIMEDIALE DARSTELLUNGS- UND PRÄSENTATIONSFORMEN. Im Zentrum unserer Aufmerksamkeit stehen dabei die hohe Relevanz und die Möglichkeiten der AUDIVIESUELLEN MEDIEN. Kein anderes Medium als der Film vermag Gegenwart mittels Handlung so gut in Zukünfte zu projizieren. Wirklichkeitssinn wird zu Möglichkeitssinn. Fiktion zu Realität.

TERRESTRISCHE ARCHITEKTUR Wir werden nachmoderne UTOPIEN skizzieren, die erste architektonische Antworten auf die NEUE GEO-SOZIALE FRAGE des 21. Jahrhundert geben. Dabei orientieren wir uns an zukunftsweisenden Gesellschaftsmodellen und hinterfragen kritisch überkommene Unterscheidungen wie links und rechts, fortschrittlich und reaktionär, global und lokal. Auf Basis unserer Recherchen sollen Schritt für Schritt IDEEN ZU PERSÖNLICHEN ARCHITEKTURVISIONEN in unterschiedlichsten Dimensionen und Maßstäben über das Teilen einer gemeinsamen, ökologisch stabilen Erde entstehen, die die modernistische Trennung in Natur-, Agrar- und Siedlungsräume überwinden. Vom „CHANGE OF UTOPIAS“ zu den „UTOPIAS OF CHANGE erfinden wir terrestrische Architekturen für hybride Lebewesen, die über die Engführung von Kultur und Naturlandschaften in der Critical Zone erzählen. Im Zentrum unserer Arbeit steht der PROZESS, die INTERPRETATION und das EXPERIMENT – der Weg ist für uns das Ziel.

We design UTOPIAS OF CHANGE for the 21st century to save our earth. The denial of the explosion of inequalities and the climate situation are one and the same phenomenon.¹ Since 2020, the NEW GEO-SOCIAL QUESTION in the 21st century has been our thematic focus.

ARCHITECTURE AND ART – ARCHITECTURE AS ART ARCHITECTURE, together with PAINTING and PLASTICS, has always been an integral part of the visual arts. The three arts together form a network. They are joined by GRAPHICS, DESIGN and NEW MEDIA. Their common core allows the arts to work together. Architecture plays a unifying and therefore central role. With this in mind, the strengthening of AUTHORSHIP and the development of independent architectural personalities are at the centre of our architectural teaching.

BE UNDISCIPLINED With the progressive overcoming of disciplinary boundaries within the visual arts and beyond, we are gaining a new freedom to experiment and produce in an interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary and, at best, non-disciplinary, i.e. “undisciplined” way. Together, we are overcoming the separation between the arts and sciences that emerged with the Enlightenment and understanding architecture as an integrative discipline, as a unity of artistic, scientific and social disciplines. We find Leonardo in the technical and art history museums.

TO DESIGN IS TO INVENT To design is to invent VISIONS. Donella H. and Dennis L. Meadows claim that having visions means being able to imagine what you actually want to have and see; not what we have conventionally been taught as desirable. Architectural design emerges from recognising, defining, reflecting and communicating complex challenges related to our living space and relates to the contemporary design, transformation and preservation of a terrestrial, liveable, just and aesthetically pleasing shared world. We understand DESIGN AS A CENTRAL ARTISTIC SUBJECT.

UTOPIAS OF CHANGE CHANGE! With this appeal, Graeme Maxton builds a bridge to the near future and explains in frighteningly forceful words WHY WE NEED A RADICAL TURN NOW. The former Secretary General of the Club of Rome² asks what we must do now so that our children and grandchildren and we ourselves can continue to live well on this earth. What can each and every one of us do to bring about a change and ensure a sustainable world? Unfortunately, not much. Going vegan, recycling bottles and plastic, no longer owning a car, taking the train instead of the aeroplane and saving energy whenever and wherever possible – all of this is of course helpful. But nothing will change in the current fate of humanity unless radical changes are made on a much larger scale.

THE PARTY IS OVER We are at the turning point of the 21st century. This is where our future will be decided. No Hollywood hero will save us. WE must act. NOW!⁴ What can we as architects contribute to this turning point? Re- and upcycling, passive house standards, solar thermal energy, wind energy, bio-photosynthesis, green roofs and façades, the use of natural, renewable and regional resources and materials such as wood and clay, etc., also in conjunction with computer-aided production methods, organisational forms such as co-determination, building groups, building syndicates or building cooperatives are the first steps, but unfortunately not enough to save life on earth.

A RADICAL RETHINKING The current development aid, which is mostly dominated by the market economy, including infrastructure and settlement programmes in the “poor Global South”, is just as environmentally destructive as almost all current spatial planning, urban expansion and construction projects in the “rich Global North”. It is not only economics that needs to be fundamentally reformed, but also our discipline, architecture. We need to radically rethink and we need to act urgently.

UTOPIA, VISION AND PROJECTION IN ARCHITECTURE In the courses, we look at different aspects of the utopias of 20th century modernism, the social utopians of the early 19th century and much further back, all the way to ancient Greece, to Homer and his myth of Daidalos and Ikaros. It was not Daedalus, the inventor, but Icarus, who died of overconfidence despite warnings and due to excessive hubris, who was highly stylised as a hero. This is probably one of the great momentous reinterpretations of modernity, the negative effects of which can all be traced back to a lack of mindfulness and can be seen in the current state of the Earth’s habitat.

DIGITAL LOUNGES Faster, higher, stronger – the traditional virtues of the modern meritocracy are overridden here. In our studio, we will give free research and experimentation as much space as possible. Our work is characterised by communication, interaction, cooperation, collaboration and cohabitation. We will intensively study contemporary philosophical works and the state of research in the humanities, natural sciences, technology, social sciences, law, economics and cultural studies. We read, write and discuss with each other and with interesting guests from home and abroad via online conferences and in the studios, we document and communicate all this with old and new media AND WE DESIGN.

BUILDING FILMS We work in and with VIRTUAL, PHYSICAL and HYBRID REALITIES. MULTIMEDIAL REPRESENTATION AND PRESENTATION FORMS play an important role. The high relevance and possibilities of AUDIVERSAL MEDIA are at the centre of our attention. No other medium than film is able to project the present into the future so well by means of action. A sense of reality becomes a sense of possibility. Fiction becomes reality.

TERRESTRIAL ARCHITECTURE We will outline post-modern UTOPIAS that provide the first architectural answers to the NEW GEO-SOCIAL QUESTION of the 21st century. In doing so, we will orientate ourselves on forward-looking social models and critically question outdated distinctions such as left and right, progressive and reactionary, global and local. On the basis of our research, step by step, IDEAS FOR PERSONAL ARCHITECTURAL VISIONS in a wide variety of dimensions and scales will be developed about sharing a common, ecologically stable earth that overcomes the modernist division into natural, agricultural and settlement areas. From the “CHANGE OF UTOPIAS” to the “UTOPIAS OF CHANGE”, we invent terrestrial architectures for hybrid living beings, which tell a story about the intertwining of culture and natural landscapes in the Critical Zone. At the centre of our work is the PROCESS, the INTERPRETATION and the EXPERIMENT – for us, the journey is the destination.
